Dresden

Saxony, Germany

Dresden is the capital of the German state of Saxony and has been residence of the Saxonian Kings for centuries.
During our 2007 visit to Germany, we spent three days in Saxony and one of them was devoted to Dresden.

After breakfast in the "Gun Powder Tower," we visited Dreden's most famous church, the Church of Our Lady.

The church was originally built in 1743, but in February of 1945, during one of the heaviest bombings of World War II, it was completely destroyed. It took until 2005, to rebuild it.

Today, the church serves as a symbol of reconciliation between former warring enemies, holding monthly services in English language.

Right next to the church is one of Germany's most famous castles, the Dresden Zwinger, which is probably best translated with Bailey.
Like the church and the rest of the town, the castle too sustained severe damage during the carpet bombings of World War II.

After the War, Dresden was the the most completely destroyed town in all of Germany. But immediately after the end of the war, Dresden's survivors started rebuilding the castle. When it reopened in 1951, just six years after the bombings, it became a symbol of the resilience of Germany's post-war generation.

"Theater Square" in the center of tow connects the castle with the Church of the Royal Court (left) and the State Opera House (right).
