Vacation 2016

August 27

Taking the Bus from Berlin to Erfurt

Berlin-Charlottenburg Postbus GmbH

The next day, I went to Berlin-Charlottenburg, to take a bus to Erfurt, where Julia would pick me up.

Berlin's Zentraler Omnibusbahnhof (German for Central Bus Station) is located at the Berlin ExpoCenter City.

Central part of the ExpoCenter is the Funkturm, a former radio tower, built in 1926 and often considered the Eiffel Tower's little brother. With a height of 492 feet, it is precisely half as tall as the big tower in Paris.

It is probably the only tall tower in the world resting entirely on porcelain insulators.

In 1935, the world's first TV program was broadcasted from this tower. It ceased broadcast operations in 1973 and now serves as a restaurant and a lookout tower.

Here we are at ZOB, Berlin's Central Bus Station.

From Here, Busses travel to all parts of Europe, as far as Varna at the Black Sea or Kiev in Ukraine.

I only took a bus to Erfurt in Thuringia, with a short stop in Leipzig.

In Leipzig, we stopped at an obelisk commemorating the first railroad in Saxony, which was established in 1833.

The bus stop was right next Leipzig Central Station, Europe's largest railway terminus.

We could also get a glimpse of the town's tallest building, City-Hochhaus.

This skyscraper in the shape of a book was once built for the Leipzig University, which earned it the nick name "The Wisdom Tooth" (Weisheitszahn).

From there, it was only a short trip to Erfurt and then to Coburg, where Julia and Kay live.
