Ehrenburg Palace was built in 1547 and served as the main Coburg residence for the
ruling princes of Saxe-Coburg for 379 years until 1918. It replaced the Veste Coburg as
the dukes' town Residence. The palace was named Ehrenburg ("Palace of Honour") by Emperor Charles V honoring the fact that it had been constructed without the use of forced labour. The palace was remodeled several times. It got its current look by famous Prussian architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel, who covered the entire facade in sandstone between 1816 and 1840. We did not take any pictures inside, but borrowed some from Wikipedia. |

The theatre was built under the reign of Ernst I, the
the first sovereign duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. The duke left a strong imprint on the town and his statue is placed in front of the palace. A little furhter up the hill, in the court yard is an equestrian statue of his son, Ernst II, the second duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and older brother of Prince Albert, the husband of Queen Victoria of Great Britain. The monument, designed by sculptor Gustav Eberlein, is the central part of the Coburg Court Yard, which was created under the reign of Ernst II. |

The way through the court yard went past the mausoleum of Duke Franz Friedrich Anton and
his wife Auguste Caroline Sophie (the parents of Ernst I). Soon, we approached Coburg's oldest castle, the "Veste." |
