I50 - CLOTH ARMOUR

This is the lightest armour available and provides very little protection but it does have its advantages, the main one being cost. All but the poorest of adventurers can afford it easily. The armour is also less cumbersome than other kinds. This means less weight to carry around and also greater freedom of movement, an important factor for mages, thieves and anyone in a hurry. This armour looks like a thick quilted tunic which hangs to the knees and has half length sleeves. It is popular amongst farmers and the inhabitants of most villages.

I5I - LEATHER ARMOUR

Leather armour is usually worn by thieves but is also popular amongst penniless fighters. Two types of leather are used: flexible and lightweight where movement is needed (e.g. arms and upper legs), and tough, hardened leather everywhere else (e.g. chest, forearms and shins). It provides only light protection but is inexpensive, easy to wear, and does not restrict a character's movements. Leather armour is commonly worn by orcs, goblins, gnolls, etc.

I52 - RING MAIL

Ring mail is a suit of leather armour to which metal rings have been stitched. These make it quite a lot heavier and also rather noisy but most characters would agree that the extra protection more than compensates. Thieves find it difficult to sneak about using this armour and mages may have difficulty casting spells correctly while weighed down in ring mail. Armour of this kind causes severe problems for anyone trying to swim and weaker characters may begin to tire if moving rapidly while wearing it.

I53 - SCALE MAIL

This armour consists of a supple leather jerkin to which hundreds of small metal plates have been stitched. It is heavy and uncomfortable to wear but provides good protection against most weapons. It is more effective than ring mail but not quite as good as chain. Swimming in this armour is impossible and it can be tiring to wear if moving fast. Thieves will find it very difficult to operate while wearing this armour and moving in combined spaces, eg dungeons, will also be awkward. Weaker monster types will usually be wary of characters wearing armour of this quality.

I54 - CHAIN MAIL

This is one of the best armour types available. It is lighter than scale or ring mail but provides much better protection due to the care and skill with which it has been made. Few fighters can afford to wear armour of this quality but those that can will greatly improve their survival chances although it is not unusual for other fighters to attempt to kill them just to get the armour. Characters of below average strength will grow tired if wearing this armour for long periods of time.

I55 - PLATE MAIL

Every young fighter dreams about owning a suit of this excellent armour. Unfortunately few of them live long enough to find any and those that do often cannot afford it. The armour consists of a full suit of chain mail with additional protection provided by carefully fitted metal plates to cover vital areas. All this metal is very heavy and any character on foot will get very tired if they have to travel far. It is generally not worth buying unless you can also afford a horse to carry it about. Most common monsters will keep well away from a fighter wearing this armour.

I59 - HELMET

This piece of equipment is a valuable addition to any suit of armour. It is a common belief that fighters never use their brains and could function perfectly without them. This is not the case as has been discovered by those foolish enough to enter melee without a helmet. Enemies have a habit of hitting the one spot which is not protected and if this happens to be your head the combat can be over very quickly. Helmets are fairly cheap and readily available. They do tend to restrict hearing and vision somewhat so it is usually best for one of the non-combatant members of your group to go without. This will leave you with a good chance of spotting ambushes and traps.

Small, Medium and Large Shield

I6I - MEDIUM SHIELD

This is the commonest type of shield used by fighters. It provides better protection than a small shield and can be used anywhere. They are usually made of metal but some are made of toughened leather stretched over a wooden frame.

I62 - LARGE SHIELD

This item is large, cumbersome and very heavy but provides excellent protection in combat. Unfortunately it takes a strong person to hold one for long and any weaker characters will soon become fatigued. In very confined situations, due to its size, a medium shield would be more effective.
