ALLOY FACED OAK

A steel facing on oak can make it too heavy, so most dwarven armourers use an alloy that is lighter. This allows the shield to make the most of both the hard oak and the metal facing.

So far, the following Alloy Faced Oak items have been discovered:

ARMOUR PIERCING

The designers of these bows has generally sacrificed speed and accuracy for damage. The bows comes with a set of quarrel heads that have been specially designed to penetrate all forms of armour. High grade steel with only a very small tip, the quarrel will puncture even plate mail.

ASSASSIN's CROSSBOW

These crossbows have been blackened, even down to the quarrel tips. They are made out of smooth wood and have soft thread wrapped around the spanning wire. Firing the crossbow makes a soft thud, much less audible than normal bows. The bow also has a second catch which when released allows the arms to fold into the stock for ease of concealment. The stock can also be used to store three bolts with further space for poisons.

So far, the following Assassin's crossbows have been discovered:

ASSASSIN's HIDE

Bat hide and mole furs are soft and black making them perfect for dark nights and silent approaches. In many cases it is not so much the superior quality of this style of equipment that benefits the user, but the fact the they remain overlooked in favour of more flamboyant opponents. Due to the soft nature of the hides used in the construction, they are augmented with fine steel wire. This is fairly revolutionary and does not appear to have been expanded to other items. This is probably because other items are in their own right more durable anyway.

So far, the following Assassin's hides have been discovered:

ASSASSIN's BLADE

These weapons tend to be shorter than is normally typical. They invariably have matt black blades and soft leather covering the pommel. Even the blade has a soft leather sheath to prevent any noise should it be inadvertently dropped. The blades are thin and more often than not there are small holes in the blade for the placement of poisons.

BLUE STEEL

The finest quality steel has a faint blue sheen in broad daylight. How this is made is one of the closest guarded secrets of the alchemist and smith guilds. Each has their own formula which, if any would believe their boasts, requires temperatures higher than the most powerful fire ball spells. Some brag about the inclusion of dragon bones for added strength. The best of these alloys are able to bend without breaking and return to their true shape with no imperfections.

CITY COMMANDER's

The city commander always wears a suit of chain of the highest quality. This is light and bright, decorated with the city crest. Special shoulder straps hold a cloak such that it is fitted dramatically to the back of the armour where it reveals the status of the wearer yet is not encumbering. The links are always finer than normal chain, able to ripple and shine. The suit needs a lot of cleaning and does not fare well in wet weather due to the small size of the links but will turn a knife or sword with ease.

So far, the following City Commander's items have been discovered:

CITY GUARD's

Often emblazoned with the mark of the city it was made in, the armour can often be found hundreds of leagues away. The armour while generally ill-fitting, more than makes up for it by being sturdy and durable. The reason for this is that the materials that are used in their construction are taxed from the various city guilds and woe betide any guild that was found scrimping. It is surprising how unobservant city guards become should one of their own die due to shoddy armour.

So far, the following City Guard's items have been discovered:

CRAFTED

Only guild masters are able to produce items of this quality. Each piece is cunningly forged and tooled to the best of the smith's ability. Many techniques are used in the production of the work so that, while it may be little to look at, it is as good as is likely to be purchased.

CRESTED

Wings of a swan or even more fancy designs spread out from the helmet in such a way to show all that the wearer is of some standing. The crests often have to be replaced, but this in no way detracts from the superior quality of the helmet. Visors are always included in this helmet and often incorporate some aspect of the fantastic beast that forms the crest.

So far, the following Crested items have been discovered:

EMBOSSED

Rosettes in gold and silver adorn the steel revealing its superior quality and obvious value. These can be a simple a pattern of silver studs or as fancy as a leaping stag of pure gold. While serving no defensive purpose, the exorbitant cost means that the item is always of the highest quality.

ENAMELLED

Fine ridges known as ribs along with higher rims allows the armourer to coat the armour in enamel. Mostly startling colours are used to define the warrior as somebody of note. Scarlet and emerald green are common while white and black tend to be favoured by knights that worship a particular deity. While the enamel offers no more protection, the ribs that hold it do. This makes the armour much tougher than normal suits even though the metal is thinner.

So far, the following Enamelled items have been discovered:

ETCHED STEEL

A steel faced shield is often etched with a coat of arms of the sigil of a city. While this technique loses none of the protection of the shield, it often means that the shield cannot be polished as brightly. The shield offers excellent protection against attacks that would often penetrate a normal wooden shield.

EXOTIC FIBRE (Armour)

Hair sheared from the hides of strange beasts is sometimes woven into armour. The tough but flexible armour is enough to turn many blades and arrows as well as cushion mace blows. This armour is quite rare as many of the beasts that provide the hair do not do so willingly..

EXOTIC WOOD (Polearms)

Legendary forests and fairy woods have all manner of peculiar trees. The wood from these is often used for wizard staffs for its innate magical nature. The staffs are instantly recognizable by little faces that seem to form from the knots in the wood. Even when sanded smooth they will quickly become gnarled, each gnarl taking on an uncanny resemblance to the owner.

So far, the following Exotic Wood polearms have been discovered:

EXOTIC WOOD (Shields)

Any old piece of wood is of no use when it comes to making shields. Armourers scour the world looking for new materials to use. The heart wood of those trees found in the deepest, darkest forests is often superior to the more common oak and this is reflected in the cost of such shields.

FILIGREE HILTED

Fine steel wires guard the hilt and the hands wielding the weapon, but also indicate the superior quality of the weapon. More often than not fine etching also covers much of the blade indicating the guild or the master that forged the weapon. The filigree lends an air of grace to the wielder.

FITTED

Virtually all armour is built to a standard size, but once in a while, a suit will be made taking into consideration the person it was made for. Every contour is lovingly finished so that to wear and move is easier. While the armour offers little more real protection, the fitting gives a significant edge in combat.

GEM ENCRUSTED

Alchemists swear by the power of precious stones. Amethysts for healing, quartz for protection, rubies for prowess and so on. It therefore comes as little surprise that swords forged for noblemen often incorporate small stones around the hilt, while helmets are often studded with quartz crystals. These are set in designs that sparkle and shine revealing the item as a truly magnificent piece of art that can't fail to go unnoticed.

GILT

The entire armour has been brushed with gold leaf. The effect is quite astonishing. In light, the armour looks to be made of pure gold. Gold studs and decorations are also added just to finish the effect. The armour has to be of excellent quality as the cost of coating every small link and plate in beaten gold is exorbitant.

GOLD INLAID

Fine swirls on gold wire run around the steel forming beautiful patterns that may be unique to the crafter. The designs are maybe crests of the guild, or even personal to the smith himself. As this process is a slow and laborious task, costing more than the actual gold wire, it is reserved for only the best quality equipment.

HUNTER's

Hunter's equipment is light and durable. It is able to withstand days in the rain as well as blistering sun. The materials are treated in similar ways to lesser materials, but the process is extended. This allows the crafter to select the best materials as lesser ones become corrupted and can be discarded, while the best are markedly improved.

KNIGHT's ARMOUR

Knight's armour is very personal. It is designed to allow freedom while riding, but with extra protection around the legs. A small disc is fitted over the heart to deflect thrusts and a ridge of steel has been added to both sides of shoulders to give extra protection against decapitation. Finally mail is used along all of the joints. All this extra weight is countered by using less protection over the back of the armour and around the left side. These regions are designed to be protected by a shield or should never be shown to an enemy.

KNIGHT's HELMET

A knight's helmet is made of superior steel. The steel is often shaped like a monster or a fabulous beast. While heavier than a normal helmet due to thicker steel it still feels more comfortable than lighter ones as it is designed to be worn for long periods.

KNIGHT's SHIELD

The knight's shield is emblazoned with the crest of the knight and has a long tapered design to give extra protection for the legs. The shield is bound with steel and has two straps allowing the shield to be carried in a number of ways designed for fighting from horseback or from the ground.

LANCER'S MAIL

Lancer's scale is designed to deflect blows from spears. An under coat of chain is then overlaid with a surcoat of fine scales each pointing upwards and sidewards. This also protects the wearer from upward slashes from foot soldiers. Heavy protection is given to the legs, stomach and chest as these are the areas most vulnerable to a lance strike.

LAYERED

Layering armour is a more advanced technique of quilting. Where in quilting, the gaps are padded with wool, layering has each layer compacted to the previous one with no gaps. Further, each layer is treated in a different manner to combine different properties. The outer layer is treated to be rigid and not tear while the under layers are soft and thick to absorb the impact.

LEGENDARY

Not all weapons are fresh from the forge. Some have been around for a very long time, remaining out of sight for hundreds of years. Legendary weapons are those that have a history; they may have been used in a great battle, or carried by an adventurer on his last quest. What ever their legacy, that they have existed so long is due to their superior quality.

MILITIA

This armour is light and durable. It is fashioned of strips of steel that are thin, but laminated and riveted. This allows the armour to be lighter yet lose little of the strength. The militia armour has extra rings along the back as everybody knows that militia are often used for skirmish tactics, much of which is running away.

PLATE & CHAIN

The armour consists of a chain vest and greaves along with a breast plate. The design is such that it combines the flexibility of chain along with the added protection of a firm plate covering the vital organs. All the joints are covered in finely linked high steel mail allowing them to be smaller.

POACHER's

These are more like oilskins than armour, but serve the purpose well. By draping over the wearer and reaching almost to the ground, they tend to take the force out of the blow long before it connects with the body. They are incredibly warm and waterproof, but rarely come in any colour other than a dull brown or grey giving the wearer a rather dubious appearance.

POWER

The arms of this crossbow are shorter than many others, but much thicker. Loading of the bow is impossible without a spanning device. The bolt fired from this bow easily rips through flesh and bone. Only a fool would rush a group of foes armed with these.

PRECISION

A finely crafted sight along with a revolutionary rolling locking mechanism allows the trigger to be pulled without the wire jumping during release. This smoother action allows the quarrel to fly straight and true. The internal wheel must be regularly oiled but despite this it is still prone to wear. Overall, the added accuracy far outweighs the hassle of maintenance.

RAZOR SHARP

To produce a weapon with an edge that can slice iron like green wood is one of the hardest techniques to master. The smith produces a fine edge of folded metal that is fixed to the main blade by guarded processes revealed only to the guild masters. The owner of this blade need never carry a razor but should be exceptionally careful when shaving.

RE-FORGED

Many traveling smiths make much of their money selling their services to merchants and nobility. Among many of the more mundane tasks of fixing pans and ploughs is the occasional order to re-tool or re-forge an old weapon of above average construction or to place a new haft to a superior quality head. The result is a re-forged weapon, that may be superior if the original was of fair quality, but is often only a shadow should the weapon have been magically imbued.

SILK LINED

Silk is a rare and expensive commodity. Its value in armour is that when treated, it is very hard to rip. This is excellent at deflecting arrows as long as the silk is fitted in such a way that an arrow cannot drag the silk lining with it. Another benefit is the cooling properties of silk that make it comfortable to wear.

SILVER EMBOSSED

Studs of pure silver decorate the crossbow. These quickly identify the weapon as superior in many respects. Seasoned wood that has been well oiled along with steel arms, the weapon looks as good as it fires. These weapons are almost always made for nobles.

STEEL

Steel is a difficult metal to make and the various recipes that exist are guarded by alchemists and smithy guilds alike. The substance is superior to common iron as it is not prone to rust. It is also less brittle than common pig iron and in the hands of a talented smith has even been used in the production of bows, although it is more common in crossbows.

STEEL CHAINED

STEEL FACED

While bindings offer greater protection against blades, facing the entire face of the shield in steel offers greater protection against thrust blades with only a small compromise towards chopping weapons. The face of the shield is often polished rather than painted so that it reflects the light dazzling the opponent.

STEEL SHOD

There is nothing like a large chunk of steel fitted to either end of staff. This simple addition turns a bit of wood into dangerous weapon. The staff itself is generally made out of a stout wood such as oak. While the staff is often heavy, a good crack will split skulls and break ribs.

STEEL SPANNED

While many of more powerful crossbows have to be spanned with metal, these have wire that has been specifically designed for the job. The wire will not break in the cold, nor will it lose power in hot weather. It can remain drawn and set for a few hours with no obvious problems. The production of this wire is the pride of any smith's guild and can often cost more than the crossbow.

STEEL SPIKED

Lighter and more durable than iron spikes, steel is on the other hand much more expensive. Even so, steel spikes are quite common to weapons that are used by shepherds. A nasty jab by one of these is usually enough of a deterrent to all but the hungriest of wolves or poachers.

STEEL WRAPPED

The haft of the weapon is the weakest part and because of this many are sheathed in steel. The making of steel for this task is not as easy as it may seem. The strips have to be far superior to that of normal steel as they cannot be heavy without making the weapon unwieldy. By the same token, thin strips will offer no protection as the weapon can be broken even when the strips are still intact.

STRENGTHENED (Sling)

The use of fine strips of guts taken from rare creatures such as drakes are added to the seams of the sling. While the price of the sling that was fully made of such a substance would be prohibitive, it is found that when used in conjunction with common materials the result is still far superior to many other types.

SWAN HILTED

One of the oldest qualifications of the weapons smith's guild is the forging of this hilt. The swan hilt does not actually look like a swan, it is more a definition of strength, beauty and graceful finish. It is traditionally made from a white alloy, although rich guilds have been known to use more expensive materials. The wielder of a swan hilted weapon is assured a weapon of excellent quality.

TOURNEY

These bows have been designed with precision in mind. They are invariably lighter with only a low draw, enabling the archer to keep the bow at full pull for the time it takes to precisely aim at the target. The bows fire truer than normal bows allowing the archer to strike more vulnerable areas in combat, more than compensating for the lower power of the weapon.

WARRIOR's CHAIN MAIL

This chain mail may look like little more than typical chain, without either decoration or ostentation, but is still favoured by the more modest of warriors. It is made exclusively by dwarves but for all humanoid races. It is dark steel of incredible strength and often draped down to the mid thigh. While heavy it is well balanced so does not encumber more than other suits. Where more flexibility is needed, rather than slits that are found in lesser suits, the dwarves have used woven steel which looks like cloth.

WARRIOR's AXE

An axe designed for combat bears only a rudimentary similarity to a wood cutters. The warrior's axe is often ornate with a spike projected from behind the head allowing the warrior to pierce armour, but also to act as a counter balance. The haft is gripped along the entire length for a variety of holds to be maintained to enable parrying. Soft leather is also wrapped around the haft to prevent the weapon from slipping when the blood starts to flow.
