ACCURATE The use of cross wires and sighting guides allows this weapon to be fired with greater proficiency than normal crossbows. The guide has to be fitted and adjusted to each crossbow. For this reason, it can only be done by a competent bowyer. The buyer more than pays for this extra gadget although in a time of combat this could be money well spent. So far, the following Accurate items have been discovered:

ALLOYED Recent revolution in the alchemist's guilds has meant that smiths have become more adventurous in their creations. The mixing of pure metals to produce a variety of new alloys each with their own special characteristics has allowed smiths to revolutionize weapon making. Light weapons or hafts to replace the wood component are the most popular at present but the occasional sword can be found. Despite optimism for the future, alloys are still quite rare, generally kept in smith guild's cabinets. So far, the following Alloyed items have been discovered:

ALLOY HAFTED While wood is the most common haft, it does have the basic problem of being wood. Weather and time as well as repeated hits whittle it away. An alloy haft is one that is nearly as strong as the head of the weapon, but is made out of a lightweight alloy. How the alloy is made is a trade secret of the alchemist and smith guilds. So far, the following Alloy Hafted items have been discovered:

ARCHER's An archer of some proficiency is able to determine the quality of a bow. These weapons are always superior to common bows. More often than not, the bow has been made with the exact measurements of the archer taken into consideration. The power, length and draw of the bow are suited to the archer. So far, the following Archer's items have been discovered:

BALANCED The sign of a good weapon is the position at which it will balance. Too close to the pommel and the weapon will tire the wrist, too close to the point and the weapon will tend to rise and be unwieldy in combat. A balanced blade allows the wielder to strike the mark with greater precision. So far, the following Balanced items have been discovered:

BLOOD QUENCHED It is believed that the soul resides in the blood. This rather dubious technique quenches the newly forged weapon with the life blood of a creature famous for its strength and prowess in combat. The process must work, or else the weapons are already superior to most, as these weapons strike true. Certain cultures with their nefarious inclinations may well substitute dwarven blood for animal blood. So far, the following Blood Quenched items have been discovered:

BRONZE WRAPPED As staffs are cheap and tend to be used by farmers, they are often strengthened with strips of bronze. While iron could be used, its tendency to rust makes it unsuitable. The extra strength and durability is highly prized as is its ability to reflect sunlight from the top of hills as a warning to those in the valley. So far, the following Bronze Wrapped items have been discovered:

CLERIC's MACE The mace has always been a symbol of priesthood, the reason lost in antiquity, but it may be the modern equivalent of the ancient walking staffs that the pilgrims carried during their long travels. Whatever the connection, the Cleric's mace is decked in symbolism although this means little to the person on the receiving end. So far, the following Cleric's Maces have been discovered:

COMPOSITE Laminate strips of horn and wood and even metal in some cases are glued with special resins so that they can bend without splitting. The process produces a bow that is lighter than normal ones, but retains all the strength of a normal bow. The resins also aid in moisture repulsion, the biggest destroyer of bows. So far, the following Composite items have been discovered:

EXOTIC HAIR Stronger hair that has been properly oiled produces fine quality slings. They are strong and light and can be spun at very fast speeds due to little drag. Stones hurled from these weapons deliver substantially more damage than common ones. So far, the following Exotic Hair items have been discovered:

EXOTIC WOOD (Bows) Any old piece of wood is of no use when it comes to making bows. Bowyers scour the world looking for new materials to use. The heart wood of those found in the deepest, darkest forests are often superior to more common yew and willow, but the price of these weapons often reflects the exotic nature of the bow. So far, the following Exotic Wood bows have been discovered:

EXTRA HEADED Extra heads are rarely added to articulated weapons as they can make the weapon unbalanced and impossible to use. Weapon smiths of consummate skill though, from time to time do produce the occasional one. The extra head allows the weapon to inflict even more damage, but this is nothing compared to the fear that just seeing the weapon in motion inspires. So far, the following Extra Headed items have been discovered:

GILT FINISHED The hilt of the weapon or the scales and plates of armour are covered in a fine sheet of battered gold. The technique allows the item to achieve all the splendour and marvel that gold imbues without the unfortunate weight that accompanies gold. Obviously this is only reserved for weapons that are superior in quality. So far, the following Gilt Finished items have been discovered:

HIGH STEEL Steel has been around for many years, but still only smiths with enough money to consort with alchemists have access to high steel. The production of the metal is a guarded secret taught in the last years of apprenticeship. It is even more resistant to the elements than steel but tends to have a duller colour often appearing stained with rainbow hues. So far, the following High Steel items have been discovered:

HORNED HELMET A pair of massive horns from any one of a range of formidable creatures adorns the helmet. These are not only intimidating but also deflect some of the downward blows that would hammer into the wearer's head. So far, the following Horned Helmets have been discovered:

ICE QUENCHED One of the hardest quenching techniques to master. Due to the inclination of the newly forged weapon to shatter, only the largest cities produce these weapons. The destructive technique is a sure if expensive way of testing the weapon for flaws as it is these that cause to blade to explode. So far, the following Ice Quenched items have been discovered:

IRON BOUND OAK Combining iron and oak into a shield produces a shield that while a great deal stronger than a normal one, it has to be slightly smaller to accommodate the extra weight of both the materials. The overall effect though is a shield of superior quality. So far, the following Iron Bound Oak items have been discovered:

IRON CHAINED Replacing the cords that hold the heads to the staff with chain is a costly affair as each link has to be carefully welded to maintain strength. The chains also crush the target inflicting more damage. A further benefit of using chains is the howling noise that they produce when whirled. Some have likened it to the howl of the soul when it knows it is to be separated from its body. So far, the following Iron Chained items have been discovered:

IRON SPIKED Iron spikes along the top of any wooden weapons are not only intimidating but will also leave a nasty gash when they connect. These are basically similar to an old threshing tool used on farms. In fact when twirled, these weapons are sometimes mistaken for flails or morning stars and in fact may well have been their forerunner. So far, the following Iron Spiked items have been discovered:

MASSIVE These weapons are much larger than normal ones, sometimes comically so, until faced with an opponent wielding one. It is certain that the axe will never be any use chopping down trees, but by the same token it was never meant to. So far, the following Massive items have been discovered:

METEORIC When the stars fall from the firmament, smith's apprentices are sent with utmost haste to collect the remains. Often there is nothing to find, but occasionally nuggets of star iron are found. Typically the weapons are heavy and dull grey and rarely appear to be well made. This is no indication of their capability though as many a soul can testify to. So far, the following Meteoric items have been discovered:

PLAITED HIDE Using thin but prime strips of hide, the sling suffers little drag yet is remarkably strong. Bigger stones means more damage if they can be thrown fast enough. This sling is more than adequate for the job. So far, the following Plaited Hide items have been discovered:

QUARTZ POMMELED Mystics and other learned men acknowledge the protective properties that are associated with quartz. For this reason, it is a favoured pommel stone in the hilts of many weapons. High quality stones are cut into fine shapes such as bear heads, but more often they are polished smooth. Only the finest stones are used as at the end of the day the warrior's life is at stake. So far, the following Quartz Pommelled items have been discovered:

REINFORCED Slithers of wood or metal are combined with either padding or quilting to strengthen the larger more vulnerable regions. Steel is a common metal, although this is often uncomfortable. These can be placed on the outside as ridges to deflect slashes. So far, the following Reinforced items have been discovered:

SEASONED (Pole Arms) Most staffs are fresh from a tree, chopped just prior to market or a journey. These have been seasoned using age old methods. These staffs are much more durable than normal staffs and often become the life-long companion of farmers. There are also Seasoned Missile Weapons +1 So far, the following Seasoned items have been discovered:

SILVER INLAID Tooling small lines out of an item is a laborious task requiring a strong hand and superior tools as well as an artistic flare. For this reason, only superior weapons and armour are ever inlaid. The silver is placed into the newly made line via a number of techniques; these may be the hammering of wire or the pouring of molten metal. Where the original item was oil quenched, the silver on black can look absolutely stunning. So far, the following Silver Inlaid items have been discovered:

SMITH's The sheer bulk of this weapon is daunting in itself. Designed for a person with an inhumanly strong arm, many would not even be able to pick this up. These weapons are always of at least fair standard, the respect they have claimed due to their sheer size. So far, the following Smith's items have been discovered:

STEEL BOUND Lighter strips of steel means that more can be used compared to iron without the shield becoming unwieldy. The shield so decked out offers more protection against heavy blades. The steel binding also holds the shield together against bash attacks that could snap lesser shields. So far, the following Steel Bound items have been discovered:

STEEL INLAID The haft of the weapon is bound by fine steel wire. This is generally low quality steel but serves the purpose of preventing the weapon from being snapped in half when used to parry. The steel wire is tightly bound along the shaft in such a way to cross itself repeatedly. The tautness of the wire is integral to the design as the shaft is often snapped on the opposite side to the impact. The wire holds little protection against edged weapons. So far, the following Steel Inlaid items have been discovered:

TREATED Armour Once the suit of armour is made, it is soaked in vats of urine and vinegar. These penetrate the material and make it rigid. After this, the armour is then rubbed with either beeswax or dipped in oil. This final stage is to prevent rain water from washing out the minerals that keep the armour solid. So far, the following Treated Armours have been discovered:

TREATED FIBRE Oils and solutions such as vinegar substantially toughen the material making it more durable. Common practise is to use the urine of a fabulous beast known for its prowess, although there are no documented uses of dragon's urine used in this process. Oils are the boiled down remains of appropriate beasts such as giant ants for strength and durability or giant snakes for flexibility. So far, the following Treated Fibre items have been discovered:

VISORED A visor is better than a pot helm as it allows the wearer to lift it up to look around without having to remove the helmet. This also allows a larger plate to protect the face. So far, the following Visored Helmets have been discovered:

WAR (Crossbows) These bows are much more powerful than normal crossbows and as a consequence need thicker gauge wire. Spanning devices run up the side of the bow allowing the wielder to reset the crossbow. So far, the following War Bows have been discovered:
War Light Crossbow+2 © Medieval Crossbow |
WAR (Polearms) Pole arms designed for war tend to be slightly different to the more common varieties. The heads tend to be lighter while the staff is often longer and thicker. This allows the weapon to be wielded in the field of battle for longer periods of time. Further, troops in the second line can strike past the first as the lower weight of the head makes it more manageable. So far, the following War Polearms have been discovered:
War Halberds+2 © Replicadungeon |
WEIGHTED The head of the axe is generally in proportion to the haft allowing it to be swung for hours by a competent wood cutter. When smithing weapons for combat, where only a short time will be spent using the weapon, many weapon smiths make the head disproportionately larger. The extra weight in the head will inflict superior damage. So far, the following Weighted items have been discovered:
