300 - POWDER PACK

The ideal purchase for the mage in a hurry who has all the money to burn. Although more expensive than shopping around for the individual powders, most mages will gladly fork out the extra for a powder pack so that they do not keep the rest of the party waiting. A powder pack contains five of each powder including the ones that the alchemist does not display as being in stock.

30I - BRAINCRYSTAL

Similar to quartz in appearance but far more valuable, Braincrystal can be found all over Kharne but only ever in minute quantities. The crystal varies in colour from blue to green. When ground to a coarse powder the crystal can be used in a variety of magical conjurations. It is usually buried in the ground which makes it very difficult to find. Fortunately it is poisonous to many kinds of plantlife and a small patch of barren soil in the midst of fertile ground is a good indication that braincrystal is present.

302 - BLACKLOTUS

The Blacklotus is the rarest of the lotus plants and the most valuable. The pollen from its large black blooms has magical properties and can be used in the casting of several different spells. The Blacklotus requires dead flesh to feed upon and anyone digging up the roots of one will find the bones of numerous small animals buried around it. how the plant persuades so many creatures to die in its presence is a mystery.

303 - ACIDPASTE

Acidpaste is extracted from the gut of the Jackata (a rare species of lizard). Jackatas are notoriously difficult to catch, and this added to their rarity makes Acidpaste quite expensive. The Acidpaste lines the Jackata's stomach and must be carefully scraped off, then dried in the sun. It can then be used as a magical component in many different spells. As an added bonus the flesh of the Jackata is succulent and delicious when cooked over an open fire.

304 - ACIDGRIP

Acidgrip is obtained from a rare species of plant which has an unusual defence mechanism. The species has highly acidic sap which burns the mouth of any creature foolish enough to try eating it. If the sap is collected and then boiled it will leave a powdery yellow residue useful in many different kinds of magic. The residue is still quite acidic and should be treated with care to avoid burns especially around broken skin.

305 - DYINGBREATH

When a creature dies, its life force escapes from the body with the last exhalation of air from its lungs. There are certain rare kinds of soil which can capture this essence. If a mage can collect this soil from around the carcass of a dead animal it can be used in a variety of magical preparations. (Some scholars believe that if a creature's last breath is trapped within the body the creature will return as undead.

306 - POWDEREDBLOOD

Powderedblood is a magical component extracted from the roots of Bloodweed, a small, and rare, relative of Vampire Grass. Bloodweed obtains nourishment by sucking the blood from small mammals trapped by its sharp blade like leaves. The roots are deep red in colour and to produce powdered-blood they must be burnt with a mixture of fresh blood and sand. The grass can be recognised by the numerous small bones of its victims lying around it. Care must be taken collecting the roots for the leaves are quite capable of severing a finger.

307 - SLICEDEYE

Slicedeye is a rare variety of the optica-petulus species. The flowers of the species are recognisable by their oval petals with eyelike markings and colouration. The petals of Slicedeye are pale blue with a purple iris and black pupil. A jagged red line runs through the middle of each one. The ash produced by burning an unopened bud in a hot fire can be used as a component in many spells. The petals lose all potency if the bud has already opened.

308 - DRYVENOM

The Deathshead spider is greatly feared throughout Kharne but is in fact no threat to any creature larger than a mouse or small bird. It is about three inches long with poisonous fangs but the poison is far too weak to affect bigger animals. A bee sting would cause more discomfort. The poison can be converted to a powder by slowly drying it on a hot metal plate. Once this is done it is useful in a variety of magical spells. The Deathshead spider gets its name from the skull-like white markings on its back.

309 - TONGUESAUCE

Tonguesauce is a sticky black powder with a strong smell of aniseed. It is prepared by boiling the saliva of the rare flivver bird. Flivvers can be found all over Kharne. They are small and grey and quite unremarkable in all respects other than the magical properties of their saliva. Several attempts have been made to breed flivvers in captivity but the birds invariably sicken and die within a few weeks.

OTHER POWDERS

The powders above are the nine powders used in KJC's Game Quest 20. There is a variety of other powders used in several other games. Not only the powders, but also their oder number can change from game to game. Powders and Spells are the only part of the game that vary in almost every issue.

Here are some of the other powders we discovered in 20 years of playing Quest in England, Germany and Australia.

They might be useful information for games other than Quest 20.

BRINDLEDUST

This rare mineral can be found all over Kharne, but only in minute quantities. It looks exactly like dry soil which would make it impossible to identify where it not for the mint scented lichen which can usually be found growing on it. the lichen itself is valueless but Brindledust is a component vital in the casting of many magical spells. It is also claimed to have aphrodisiac properties but this has never been proven.

CRUSHEDNUTS

A delicacy enjoyed only by the wealthiest of gourmets is the Midas Nut. Not only is the plant on which the nut grows very rare but the nut itself has unusual properties which make it useful in certain kinds of spell casting. To prepare the nut as a magical component, it should be carefully dried and then ground to a fine dust. Most mages then mix the dust with a mild poison or with chalk. This has no effect on the nut's magical properties but it does ensure than anyone with more money than sense will think twice before attempting to eat it.

DUNGMOLD

This rare and valuable growth can sometimes be found on the droppings of just about any creature type. It is grey-green in color and smells even worde than the dung that nourishes it. If the mold is carefully removed and dried, it can be used by mages for many different spells. Many attempts have been made to cultivate the mold, but without success. Fortunately, the smell, detectable from many yards away, makes the mold easier to detect.

GUTSLIME

Yellow Death is a rare disease which affects all mammalian creatures. It strikes without warning but does not appear to be contagious. No-one knows where or when it will strike but the result is invariably fatal within a few weeks. The victim gradually slips into coma and then death while the skin and whites of the eyes turn a sickly yellow. Inside the body the intestines fill with a thick slimy mucus. When a mage finds the body of a creature which has died from Yellow Death he can extract this mucus from the gut and boil it down to form the magical component known as Gutslime.

MAIDENSEYE

The petals of this rare flower are the source of a magical component valued by all mages. Each petal is eye-shaped, white in colour with a black spot surrounded by a blue or gold ring. On a misty morning the dew on the petals looks like the tears in a young girls eyes. The petals must be dried and then ground to a dust to be useful. The ground leaves must be looked after carefully for any exposure to excessive heat or cold will render them useless. The normal practise is to carry them in a soft pouch worn inside a mage's clothing.

YELLOWLIVER

Chacka grass is a rare form of plant life, containing a mild poison. Small doses are harmless, but any creature grazing on it will eventually build up a lethal dose of it within its body. The poison accumulates within the liver, turning it a distinctive dirty yellow color. If the liver is finely chopped and then burned with a mix of charcoal and lime, the resulting powder has strange magical properties which make it usefull in many kind of spell casting. The rest of the body is edible but has a distinctive and unpleasant taste as a result of the poisoning.
