xxxxxxxxxxxxxx82I - SWAMP BEASTS

The creatures of the marshes and wet lands are often found together either feeding on each other or any other hapless victim that would invade their domain. Every child throughout the lands have grown up with tales of things that crawl in the swamps creeping through open windows and swallowing babies whole. It is best to avoid the marshes if at all possible.

NIGHT SOIL

Small grubs hungrily feast on any rotting corpses, tearing into the bloated skin seeking the juicy internal organs. These impatient maggots will often burrow into the flesh while it is still warm or even very much alive, though this is often while the traveller is resting.

GIANT FROG

The giant frog is like an ordinary frog in all respects apart from its great size (about five feet long) and its poisonous bite. Most live in swamps or marshes but they are sometimes found in underground dwellings or deep jungle. Characters bitten by the giant frog often contract a fever which saps toughness and health.

SPITTING NEWT

So called as they jet a thick mucus that covers the face of the victim choking and blinding them. Once the victim is dead the newt, who can grow to lengths of over fifteen feet, will drag the corpse back to its lair at the bottom of a stagnant lake. The creature is generally a mottled brown colour but with a vibrant red crest that runs all the way along its back to the tip of its tail.

GIANT CROCODILE

This huge reptile presents a very real threat to any adventurer travelling through jungle or swamp terrain. They move swiftly and silently through water and with only their nostrils above the surface they are often not sighted until too late. Larger specimens can cut a man in two with a single chomp of their tooth filled jaws or break backs with a swipe of their tail. If all else fails a favoured tactic is to grab hold and submerge, thereby drowning their victim.

SLEECH

The hideous sleech is a huge blood sucking slug. They are fortunately rare. Mature specimens measure about forty feet in length. They have thick rubbery skin and can soak up enormous amounts of damage before suffering serious injury. They move slowly but can easily keep up with a group struggling through swampy terrain. A sleech will never retreat from combat.

GARMYK

The garmyk is a large amphibious creature. It looks vaguely like a huge black frog with glowing red eyes. The garmyk hunts at night when it is almost impossible to see in the darkness. Its red eyes are hypnotic and anyone gazing into them will be entranced. The garmyk then creeps forwards and slowly feeds by licking the flesh from its victim with its long acid coated tongue. Although in agony the victim is totally unable to move or cry out. Several parties of adventurers tell of the times they have risen in the morning to discover their watchman a bloody corpse.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx822 - GIANT ANT

Ants can be found throughout the world, although the icy regions tend to have few colonies. Whenever a single ant is discovered, it is almost a certainty that others will not be far away. They are believed to be fairly intelligent as they make clicking noises that appear be some kind of communication. Their nests and colonies are large underground complexes or towers of mud and stone, the heart of which contains the queen.

LARVAE

The grubs of the giant ant are around four feet in length and appear as nothing more than a yellowish sack of puss. When squeezed by the ants they produce a sticky substance that the ants use to build their colonies. In times of stress such as when they are attacked, they will squirt this substance around them trapping the attackers until more ants arrive. How these larvae summon others is still unknown though some have noticed that they always arrive downwind.

GIANT ANT

Giant Ants are about seven feet long. They have powerful mandibles capable of cutting through armour and dripping with poison. The poison seldom causes death but it is acidic and causes serious wounds and great pain. Giant ants have no real mind to speak of and will often fight to the death. They are usually found in jungle or marshy terrain.

DRONE

While the giant ant is often seen as either very driven or mindless, the same cannot be said of the drones. While virtually indistinguishable from the giant ants, they are quite cunning, able to use tools such as large rocks as weapons. These ants are the only common ones that will flee.

WARRIOR ANT

While their bodies often seem fairly typical for an ant averaging around seven feet, their heads are dominated by huge mandibles that are almost the length of their body. These massive jaws are more than capable of severing even the body of a warrior in full plate mail, grinding up flesh and bone like rotten wood. They are remarkably stupid, clinging on to the victim long after their head has been hacked from their bodies.

QUEEN ANT

The queen of an ant hive is a bloated mass in the centre of the nest. The strange creature lays hundreds of eggs per week, each one in time becoming another ant. Even though the queen is as good as a prisoner within the hive, to find her could be folly. Her claws extend in all directions ready to slash at anything that she does not recognise and shove into her gaping maw.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx823 - GIANT SPIDER

Similar to their smaller cousins, time and dark corners of the world have bred a few giant spiders that are capable of attacking cattle with a great deal of success. They tend to stay far away from civilisation as once discovered they are ruthlessly hunted down, such is the fear that these stealthy creatures instil. As they have no interest in material goods, their lairs are sometimes littered with the items of previous meals.

DARK LAIR

The vestigial remnants of elder days, the darkest tunnels under hills and mountains contain strange creatures. Whether these are true spiders is impossible to tell as in day light their bodies vanish like the morning mist. They feed well as the lure of a pit filled with the wealth of dead adventurers is hard to pass up once their location is known. These evil creatures will even polish gold and silver so that it glints in the adventurer's torch light goading them on to their doom.

STALKING SPIDER

As with many of the giant sized denizens of Kharne, the stalking spider is not only very large but also poisonous. The largest specimens are about five foot long in the body with a leg span of up to fifteen feet. The poison they inject is not deadly but it places the victim in a deep coma. Characters in coma will eventually starve to death if no way to wake them is found. Stalking spiders do not use webs. They are found underground or in mountainous terrain.

SPINNER

There are a few species of these creatures, some create sticky webs that are covered in bits of bark and dust to hide their appearance, while others use gossamer threats that are virtually invisible in gloom of their lairs. While pinned the spider will then pounce, feeding on the generously delivered food.

WOLF SPIDER

The wolf spider is large, often over seven feet long with a thick grey fur. The fur along with two clusters of luminous yellow eyes have earned them their name. They are different from other giant spiders as they actually hunt in packs making them very dangerous indeed. These spiders will leap onto the prey and sink their poison fangs deep into yielding flesh. These are a legendary terror that may well be responsible for the loss of entire villages.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx824 - SNAKES

While most snakes are fairly harmless, rarely attacking except in defence, some have grown to such a length that they would even consider a lone traveller as a fair meal. Found in out of the way places, they are quite rare and those bitten by poisonous species almost never survive to tell the tale in civilised areas.

GRASS SNAKE

These small creatures prey on rodents and small ground birds and the only time that they have been known to attack is when a careless walker has stepped on one. Even after this initial attack, they will then flee for safety. While the bite appears small, the poison can quickly spread paralysing then killing the victim.

SPITTING COBRA

Rearing up suddenly from the undergrowth to heights of over eight feet and more the creature will startle and in those frozen seconds project a jet of poison that will corrode armour and cause the face to crumple into a mass of blood and bone. A helmet with a face plate may offer some protection but must be removed swiftly. Should the snake be outnumbered, it will then flee returning later to feast on the dead if they are still there.

KHARNE PYTHON

This is a huge poisonous snake, growing up to thirty feet in length. Its poison is extremely deadly. Variants of the snake can be found underground, in jungles, or in desert terrain. In each case the snakes colour has adapted to suit the environment. Underground snakes are a dark brown, or black, those found in the desert are a sandy brown, and the jungle variant is dark green. This is a great help in surprising its victims most of whom do not notice its presence until they feel teeth in their necks and crushing coils wrapping around their limbs.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx825 - GIANT TOAD

Giant toads can be found in swamps all over the world and occasionally in underground caverns. With their poisonous bite they are a deadly opponent for any adventurer. They are not particularly intelligent and will usually sustain heavy losses before considering retreat. They are afraid of fire.

Old wives tales hint that the skin of this beast is useful in a number of concoctions including the removal of warts. It is also reported that alchemists use these creatures in the preparation of components explaining why some apparently commonplace items are outrageously expensive.
