The Moving Wall is a half-size replica of the Washington, DC Vietnam Veterans Memorial. It was built by Vietnam veteran John Devitt, his friends Norris Shears and Gerry Haver, and other Vietnam veteran volunteers who founded Vietnam Combat Veterans, Ltd. in 1982.

The Wall went on display for the first time in Tyler, Texas in October of 1984. A second structure was added in 1987 and these two replicas now travel the USA from April through November, spending about a week at each site. In each town, the wall is hosted by local veteran's organizations and even while it travels, it is often escorted by veterans on motorcycles.

We think it a great way to pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice!

Since 1984, the Moving Wall has visited thousands of US cities. It was in Stockton from May 29 to June 1, 2008 and were were glad we went to see it.

In every town, volunteers help to keep the memories of those who gave it all alive. Here are two of their stories:

All Gave Some and Some Gave All

Why Vietnam?

"IN HONOR OF THE MEN AND WOMEN OF THE ARMED FORCES OF THE UNITED STATES WHO SERVED IN THE VIETNAM WAR. THE NAMES OF THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES AND OF THOSE WHO REMAIN MISSING ARE INSCRIBED IN THE ORDER THEY WERE TAKEN FROM US."

Preamble of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial
