Judy's First School

This is where Judy celebrated her first day at school in ...
well, a long time ago.

The first part of this school house was built in 1912 but a tornado in the same year slowed down construction, so it wasn't finished until 1914. The first-graders starting in 1912 were the first graduating class in 1920.

There were never more than 40 or 50 students enrolled at any given time and in 1966, the school closed. For a while, the building hosted a child development center and now it serves as community center with a multitude of purposes.

This is the view from Judy's old house, and every day, she went to the school's playground while her elder sisters attended classes.

When we returned, the first thing Judy did was claiming back her old playground.

And then, there was still the old school house!

The people running the community center were friendly and let us browse the place.
What is now used as gym and auditorium was once one of the two class rooms.

In the hallway, we found
some old pictures.

Some of these kids could have
been Judy's class mates.

Behind the community center is a small community garden. We first visited it in 2007.
We were glad to see how much it had grown when we came back in 2008.

X

At our last visit at the garden, the community just started a new project:
A clay oven built from scratch.

...and they invited us to participate!

It was hands on - and feet on - project!

X

We learned a lot that afternoon:

About the past and the future of Judy's home town
About how to mix clay and straw with one's feet
About how to turn that clay and straw into an oven

And

About the fun one can have if one is
in the company of friendly people.

Thank you, Caspar!
