Vacation 2010

September 13-15, Germany

Lake Constance

Baden-Württemberg

With an area of 207 square miles, Lake Constance (Bodensee in German) is Germany's largest lake. Technically, only about half of its surface area is German since the lake is bordered by Austria, Switzerland and the German states of Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria.

Like everything else in Germany, Lake Constance has a rich history. We checked out two of the sites at the German shore.

Pilgrimage Church Birnau

The pilgrimage church of Birnau was built in 1749. It stands on truly sacred grounds since the area has been a pilgrimage site for over 1,100years. The church is famous for its baroque sculptures and has been blessed as a Basilica by Pope Paul VI in 1971.

Stilt-Houses in Unteruhldingen

The Stilt-Houses are Germany's oldest archaeological open air museum. They are reconstructions of lake dwellings from the Neolithic Stone Age (4000 BC) and Bronze Age (1050 BC).

The harbor of Unteruhldingen also gave us the opportunity to get up close with the lake and to get our feet wet.
