Vacation 2010

September 14, Austria

Lüner Lake

Voralberg

The first three days of our vacation we spent with Frank at Lake Constance. He took us on some really remarkable day-trips!

On September 14, Frank went with us to Austria, into the heart of Europe's highest mountain range, the Alps.

Our first destination was Brand, a little town in the Austrian state of Voralberg.

From here we had to take a cable car to reach our final destination, Lüner Lake.

From the end of the cable car, it was still a little hike, but soon we could enjoy the amazing panorama of the Austrian Alps in all its glory.

The hike around the lake took us about three hours and the views were breath-taking all the way around!

At first glance, the site of beer kegs in the middle of an almost pristine countryside may be somewhat strange, but there is an explanation. There is a small hostel half way to the mountain top and while people will have to hike all the way up before they deserve a meal (and a beer), provisions are carried up by a small cable car.

The area may look untouched most of the time, but there are actually people living here:
