Over the Rennsteig to Jena, Thuringia |
Sonneberg County, |
On our way from Rothenburg to Jena, we cossed the border between the former West-German state of Bavaria and the former East-German
state of Thuringia. Today, this is just a line in a map, but twenty years ago, this was one of the deadliest
borders in the world.
Back then, it looked like the picture to the right. Today, the border line is marked with a sign reading, "At this place, Germany and Europe were divided until November 25, 1989, 6 PM. |
While the administrative border between the two states is just a line in a map, the natural boder is the
Rennsteig, a mountain ridge in the Thuringian Forest. The Thuringian Forest is also called The Green Heart of Germany, and it sure was green! |
We arrived in Jena in the evening and Julia had a made a reservation in a really nice hostel. |
At the next morning, we checked out Julia's and Kay's apartment. Form the back yard, it looks like any other apartment building, but it has a really nice baroque forefront. |
We spent two days exploring Jena and neighboring Erfurt (which is the state's capital). |
