On our way from Rothenburg to Jena, we cossed the border between the former West-German state of Bavaria and the former East-German
state of Thuringia. Today, this is just a line in a map, but twenty years ago, this was one of the deadliest
borders in the world.

While the administrative border between the two states is just a line in a map, the natural boder is the
Rennsteig, a mountain ridge in the Thuringian Forest. The Thuringian Forest is also called The Green Heart of Germany, and it sure was green! ![]() |

We arrived in Jena in the evening and Julia had a made a reservation in a really nice hostel. |

At the next morning, we checked out Julia's and Kay's apartment. Form the back yard, it looks like any other apartment building, but it has a really nice baroque forefront. ![]() |

We spent two days exploring Jena and neighboring Erfurt (which is the state's capital). |
