Thuringia State

Vacation 2010

September 17-18, Germany

Jena, Thuringia

Jena City

Volker's daughter Julia has been living and studying in Jena for the last six years und just got her first job
and - together with her boyfriend Kay - her first own apartment in town. Now, she took her first two-day vacation to show us the town.

We took a stroll though the old (above) and the modern (below) parts of this 800 year-old town.

In the modern part of town, one cannot escape the 436 feet high Jen Tower, the tallest building in the state.

With one third of the town's population being students, Jena is one of the biggest university towns in Germany and Julia proudly showed us parts of her school, the Physics and Astronomy department of the 460 years old Friedrich-Schiller-University.

Thanks to lense maker Carl Zeiss, Jena has been a European center of optical industry for over 150 years - which is why the town ils also called "The City of Lights." Carl Zeiss Inc., one of the world's largest and oldest optics manufacturers dominates the town's industry.

The town is also home to the world's oldest continuously operating planetarium.

With so many young people and so much modern industry, it is not surprising that the public art work (above) too is somewhat futuristic.

But the town also honors its medieval roots and we were there just in time for the annual renaissance fair (below).

To top it all, Julia took us to a geocache on top of Landgraf-Hill.

It was a steep hike, but the view was amazing and we noticed once again that we were still in "Germany's Green Heart."
With Steffen's zoom lense, we could even find Julia's house from here.

Thank you, Julia and Kay, you were great hosts!

For one afternoon, Julia took us to the state's capital.
More about that on the next page.
