Vacation 2010

September 20, Germany

Downtown Potsdam

Potsdam City

One of the places we didn't visit last time was Bassinplatz - the Basin Square. This used to be the largest of Potsdams baroque squares. There are still some remains of the old glory, like the Church of St. Peter & Paul (top left and center) and Potsdam's oldest still standing church, the French Church.

In the center of the square is a cemetery for Russian Soldiers who lost their lifes in Potsdam in the last days of World War II.

From Basin Sqare, we went to a truly peaceful place, Potsdam's Church of Peace.

The Church of Peace is situated at the outskirts of Sanssouci Park. The design resembles a High Italian monastery. Inside is an original Venetian mosaic dating back to the early 13th century. It was recued from a church ruin near Venice.

The church was dedicated in September of 1848 but building work lasted until 1854. In front of the church, a pond was designed to mirror the entire assembly. It is called the Peace Pond.

Judy spotted a Mandarin Duck in the Peace Pond. These beautiful birds are endangered in their native East-Asia, but in the best Brandenburg tradition, some refugees found asylum in Potsdam.
