Vacation 2010

September 22, Germany

Roadtrip through Havelland County

Havelland County

The countryside around Potsdam is famous for its orchards. Farmers grow asparagus, berries, squash, plums and the world's best apples. Jutta and Jürgen took us on a daytrip to see and try it for ourselves.

The morning started perfectly with breakfast in Jutta's beautiful Garden. But soon, we got into the car and out of the city.

We stopped at two orchards, first at Neumann's Harvest, then at Marquard Orchard.

Many of the local farms don't just sell their produce; they also offer entire recreational packages, from horseback riding to a full vacation at the farm.

We just enjoyed the countryside and, of course, tried the delicious fruit they had for sale.

A playground at Marquard Orchard had two old East-German farm machines on display, a tiny universal tractor, officially called RS-09, but commonly nicknamed "Molly" (above left), and a ZT-300, the strongest tractor in the Eastern Block (above right). For Volker, it brought back memories of his college years, when he actually drove one of those machines for a month.

"Selbsternte" means "Harvest Yourself" and we did a lot of that....

After we harvested enough apples, we moved on to a small village with a lot of history.
