The International Space Station is humanity's outpost in Earth orbit.

The station's Cupola is an ideal spot to observe and photograph the Earth. During his stay in 2012/13, Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield took 48,000 pictures and published many of them on his Twitter account. From there, many of his pictures made it onto the internet.

Here - in no particular order - are some of our favorites.

Clicking on the pictures leads to larger images; most of the listed sources have additional material.

When looking at the pictures, keep in mind that their orientation depends on the position of the rotating space station - north is not always up.

XXXXXXXXXXXXXPictures from Lunar Orbit

The first humans to see the Earth from the moon were Frank Borman, Jim Lovell, and Bill Anders on Board of Apollo 8. The crew took a number of pictures of the Earth, including the iconic Earth Rise picture shown right.

Another picture, showing the entire Earth above the lunar surface was taken by the Soviet probe Zond 7 on August 11, 1969.

Over the years, a number of pictures of Earth from lunar orbit have been taken.
