SunA collection of pictures of our Sun, taken by space probes. |
The picture to the left is the first picture of a solar eclipse, taken on July 28,
1851 by a photographer named Berkowski at the Königsberg Observatory. Today, there are several space craft orbiting the sun and giving us a closer view than ever before.
Like our other space galleries, the pictures have not been selected because For those more interested in the science behind the images, here is the Wikipedia-Link to the Sun Here are our favorite pictures of the Sun. |

SOHO, the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory, operated jointly by ESA and NASA
has been the most sucessfull solar mission so far. Launched in 1995 and planned for a duration of only three years, it has been delivering data and
stunning images for over 20 years.
Above are composite pictures of sun storms observed in the UV wavelength in 2002 and 2002. Below are pictures of the sun using different filters. |

In 2006, Japan launched the Hinode (Sunrise) probe. The pictures below show a closeup of a sunspot, taken in 2007 and a solar eclipse, observed in 2012. |

SOHO's success inspired a follow-up mission. In 2010, NASA launched SDO, the
Solar Dynamics Observatory. The pictures above and below feature some spectacular solar eruptions. |
