Atlas Coelestis, or Star Atlas was the largest star atlas of its time and the
first comprehensive star catalogue collected with the help of telescopes.
![]() The observations for the catalogue were made by the first Astronomer Royal, John Flamsteed. The atlas was published posthumously in 1729 (ten years after Flamsteed's death). ![]() Ian Ridpath writes that "Flamsteed’s catalogue and atlas set new standards in astronomy." ![]() Atlas Coelesti contains 25 maps of the major constellations visible from Greenwich. ![]() The drawings were done by painter James Thornhill. In addition to the constellation pages, two extra pages presented the entire northern and southern sky (see images next to the title). ![]() The 1729 edition was in black and white. A later edition in 1753 was colored. ![]() The pages are in order of the constellation's location in the night sky and many of them contain more than one constellation. We present them here in numerical order - a table in alphabetical order with the corresponding map for each constellation can be found below the images. ![]() All images were obtained from the website Atlas Coelestis. ![]() Sources: Wikipedia, atlascoelestis.com Click on the pictures for larger images. |
