Atlas Coelestis, or Star Atlas was the largest star atlas of its time and the
first comprehensive star catalogue collected with the help of telescopes.
The observations for the catalogue were made by the first Astronomer Royal, John Flamsteed. The atlas was published posthumously in 1729 (ten years after Flamsteed's death). Ian Ridpath writes that "Flamsteed’s catalogue and atlas set new standards in astronomy." Atlas Coelesti contains 25 maps of the major constellations visible from Greenwich. The drawings were done by painter James Thornhill. In addition to the constellation pages, two extra pages presented the entire northern and southern sky (see images next to the title). The 1729 edition was in black and white. A later edition in 1753 was colored. The pages are in order of the constellation's location in the night sky and many of them contain more than one constellation. We present them here in numerical order - a table in alphabetical order with the corresponding map for each constellation can be found below the images. All images were obtained from the website Atlas Coelestis. Sources: Wikipedia, atlascoelestis.com Click on the pictures for larger images. |
