De Astronomica is a book of stories whose text is attributed to
Gaius Julius Hyginus, though the true authorship is disputed.
![]() A collection of the first printed and illustrated version of De Astronomica published by German printer Erhard Ratdolt in Venice in 1482 can be found here. ![]() In addition, I found a set of illustrations published by an online art gallery. Some of them are titled "Poeticon Astronomicon," which is another name used for "De Astronomica." ![]() The pictures are cutouts with fragments of Latin text. Some are strikingly similar to the drawings of the Leiden Arathea. The labeling of the images is inconsistent and sometimes misinterpreted. ![]() Although I cannot provide any provenance for these illustrations, I find them artistically and historically relevant. ![]() Here is an extensive analysis of Hyginus' work. ![]() Please note that the gallery art.com claims copyright on the (watermarked) originals. |
