Star Lore ArtDe Astronomica1482 |
De Astronomica is a book of stories whose text is attributed to
Gaius Julius Hyginus, though the true authorship is disputed.
A collection of the first printed and illustrated version of De Astronomica published by German printer Erhard Ratdolt in Venice in 1482 can be found here. In addition, I found a set of illustrations published by an online art gallery. Some of them are titled "Poeticon Astronomicon," which is another name used for "De Astronomica." The pictures are cutouts with fragments of Latin text. Some are strikingly similar to the drawings of the Leiden Arathea. The labeling of the images is inconsistent and sometimes misinterpreted. Although I cannot provide any provenance for these illustrations, I find them artistically and historically relevant. Here is an extensive analysis of Hyginus' work. Please note that the gallery art.com claims copyright on the (watermarked) originals. |
