Star Lore around the World

Astronomy

This is the astronomy section of the Star Lore Around the World project. Click here to get the the introduction.

The main goal of this project is a collection of star lore. However, to understand how certain star formations became different images in different cultures, it is important to visualize that formation in the sky.

The astronomy section provides pictures of each constellation together with a list of the main stars.

At the top of each constellation's site, you find icons linking to what I found to be the most essential sites on astrnomy and star lore:

Wikipedia

An extensive description of each constellation.
R.H. Allen: Star Names; Their Lore and Meaning

The standard work on star lore, written in 1899.
Ian Ridpath: Star Tales

Comprehensive collection of Greek and Chinese Star Lore.
Universe Guide

Most comprehensive aastronomical collection.
Sea and Sky: Constellations

Very clear graphics of each constellation.
SkyEye

Very detailed maps of all constellations.
NASA Chandra Observatory

Brief descriptions of constellations and Greek star lore.
(Not for all constellations).
IAU Map

The official maps of each constellation issued by the International Astronomical Union.
This whole project is still a work in progress. So far, only the constellations with links are covered extensively.

In due time, there will be descriptions of every constellation.
