The Constellations of
Johann Elert Bode

In 1801, German astronomer Johann Elert Bode published Uranographia sive astrorum, a large star atlas illustrated with twenty copper plates.

The plates, showing more than 100 constellations, marked the climax of an epoch of artistic representation of the constellations.

Among the constellations shown were four developed by Bode. Three of them, Officina Typographica, the Print Shop, Machina Electrica, the Electricity Generator and Lochium Funis, the Ship Log celebrated the age of enlightenment and discovery. They were all first shown in 1801 in Uranographia.

Earlier, in 1787, Bode had designed Honores Friderici, Frederic's Honors, commemorating his patron, Prussian King Frederick the Great.

All four constellations are no longer in use. The icons below take you to a detailed description of each constellation.
